School lunches are often portrayed as disgusting, like on social media where it looks disgusting. So we interviewed a lunch lady looking for answers
Michele Kiss is a lunch lady at Iselin Middle School (IMS). Kiss stated that each school lunch and breakfast is freshly made every single morning. The sandwiches and sides are put in the refrigerator and the daily foods are already out and ready.
Along with all the food being made daily, the school lunches are crafted by the school lunch ladies or the food service workers. All food, except pre-packaged food such as yogurt, are put together by the lunch ladies.
At Iselin Middle School the lunches are pre-planned for the year but they do end up changing monthly.
“Some kids don’t like some cuisines so we change it each month to meet the needs of each student,” Kiss said. They also produce more of the same cuisine such as pizza or salad because the students like them. “The menu for lunch and breakfast each day comes from a dietitian that is from Pomptonian.
“Our lunches are required to include milk, fruits, and vegetables. Their dietitian is the reason why we get the wonderful cuisines we get each day.”
According to Kiss some of the teachers of Iselin Middle school actually buy the school lunch food but they do end up getting to pick what cuisine they want. The teacher has to tell Kiss what lunch they want earlier in the day so she and her coworkers can make it for them.
At the end of every grade level lunch, leftover food items such as fruits and more, are put into a recycling bin and given to the Woodbridge Township to be converted into gas which is used for the whole community.
