New York’s government recently implemented a car toll to discourage traffic in Manhattan. All of this started on Jan. 5th, 2025. It affects people who drive into New York.
These tolls are called car congestion pricing. It means for cars to enter Manhattan, cars have to pay a fee depending on what vehicles they’re in. For regular cars, the prices are $9, and $2.25 overnight. For motorcycles, the prices are $4.50 and $1.05. Trucks and larger vehicles are $14.40-$21.60 and overnight is $3.60 – $5.40.
Mr. Deluca is a teacher at IMS. He hasn’t gone to New York much, but thinks this will be expensive for people who commute from N.J to N.Y and how goods are going to go up in price.
“Everything around that area is going to go up in price to counterbalance the car price,” Mr. Deluca said. “Paying for anything is annoying.”
Naga Allati, a person who commutes to New York for work, thinks that the car congestion pricing will reduce traffic, but thinks it will make it too expensive for companies to get goods into New York.
“I feel like car congestion pricing is bad overall,” Allati said. “There are just so many businesses that rely on cars and trucks like taxis and moving trucks.”
Governor Phil Murphy sent a letter to the current President Donald Trump about the review of the congestion prices and what to find common ground to work on.
President Donald Trump shortly after Trump took office Monday, asking for his help with challenging New York’s controversial congestion pricing program.
