What advice would you give to a beginner in chess?
Mr. McGann– I would say to learn the basics of chess first so you can actually play in games. Also, I would tell beginners to be prepared to lose because it will happen and they will have to deal with it.
Where did your interest in chess come from?
Mr. McGann- I played chess when I was 10 years old. My uncle taught me about chess and the pieces as a hobby during Covid-19. It gave me something to focus on and as time went on, my interest in chess grew to the point where I just couldn’t stop playing.
Are there any chess openings you would like to suggest to beginners interested in chess?
Mr. McGann– Italian because it gets your minor pieces out. London system because you can play it against anything. Caro Kann defense because it is something easy to learn and is a good opening for beginners
How do you feel about being the host of chess clubs and tournaments in IMS?
Mr. McGann– This is my second year running the chess club and loving being host of it. I am very proud that so many people joined this year. I also like the consistency of being the host of the club.
In your opinion, what would you say is the best tactic a chess player could use?
Mr. McGann– The tactic that is the best is using the tactic for the problem. The best tactic you should use is based on what the game is like. Depending on the situation, it is good. Some good tactics would be putting pressure on a pinned piece. The pins are great!
Do you think that people should have chess as a hobby? Why or why not?
Mr. McGann– I think anyone can pick up chess, but it might be intimidating. I think people should not hide anything from their opponents. There are not many games like this where you not only play against your opponent but against yourself too.
Who was your inspiration to start playing chess?
Mr. McGann– My inspiration came from my uncle. He taught me a few things, but it was mainly YouTube. I watched a bunch of common chess creators. I learned most of my chess tactics and studied from them. YouTube is what got me here, and Levy Rozman has taught me many different strategies.
Who is your favorite chess player and why?
Mr. McGann– My favorite chess player is probably Magnus because he is the best of all time. Hikaru, because he is a good content creator. Bobby Fisher, considering he is one of the most dynamic chess players of all time. Mikhail Tal brings a lot of sacrifices, is overall a dynamic player, and is unique.
What do you enjoy most about playing chess?
Mr. McGann– My favorite part about playing chess is that every game is unique. You will never play a game that is the same. You can get a workout through your brain. I like putting things that I have been practicing in place.
How has chess impacted your life outside of the game?
Mr. McGann– It has influenced me to make a chess club. I get to interact with lots of kids and play chess with them. It has drawn me away from social media, and it is more productive than watching screens. It also reduces screen time and improves the way your brain functions.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Mr. McGann, I would like to add that anyone who has never tried chess should come and play. It is simple to play. You can join our chess club, and we can teach you how to play! YouTube is another major way to learn about this amazing game. It helps a lot in learning chess. It is easy and helpful! I’m also hoping to expand the chess club in the future and let the world of kids join in on this proactive game.
