Celebration rises in the US as fans come together to celebrate their team’s victory. On Sunday, February 9, the 59th Super Bowl had ended in a 40-22 victory for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs. This marks the second Super Bowl victory for the Eagles and their fifth Super Bowl to play in.
Before this year’s Super Bowl, the Eagles and Chiefs faced each other in 2023, with the Eagles losing in 38-35. Before Sunday, most experts favored the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl because they have won the previous two. However, experts also favored the Eagles because they have greater offense players, such as Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown.
The 59th Super Bowl took place on February 9, 2025, in Caesars Superdome stadium in New Orleans, USA. The teams playing for the championship were the Philadelphia Eagles, coached by Nick Sirianni, and the Kansas City Chiefs, coached by Andy Reid. Nick Sirianni actually began his coaching career with the Chiefs, while Andy Reid was the former coach of the Eagles from 1999 to 2012.
In the first quarter of the game, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts managed to score a touchdown against the Chiefs on a one-yard run. Eagles wide receiver Jahan Doston caught a pass against Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquil. In the second quarter, Eagles placekicker Jake Elliott kicked a 48-yard field goal against the Chiefs, with the score now being 10-0.
Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown managed to make a catch against Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie. However, Brown got called out by pass interference. Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean managed to score a touchdown from a 38-yard interception return. Later on, A.J. Brown scored a touchdown with a 12-yard pass from Jalen Hurts, with the game’s score being 24-0.
In the third quarter of the game, Jake Elliot scored a 29-yard field goal for the Eagles. Later on, Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith scored a touchdown with a 46-yard pass from Jalen Hurts. However, Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy scored the first touchdown for the Chiefs with a 24-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes.
Despite scoring their first touchdown, it was only the beginning of the Chiefs’ comeback. In the final quarter of the game, Jake Elliott scored another field goal of 48 yards. After the score became 37-6, Jake Elliott managed to score a second field goal in the last quarter of the game with 50 yards.
After a while, the Chiefs made their second touchdown in the game from wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins with a 7-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes. Finally, the Chiefs scored the last touchdown of the game from a 50-yard pass to Xavier Worthy from Patrick Mahomes. The entire game ended in 40-22, a great victory for the Eagles as fans celebrated.
Jalen Hurts was named the Super Bowl MVP after he had completed 17 out of 22 passes for a total of 221 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Jalen was his team’s leading rusher for 11 carries for 72 yards. His entire performance helped his team bring home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Mr. McGarry, one of the physical education teachers of Iselin Middle School, gave his thoughts about this year’s Super Bowl.
“I think [the Eagles] had a better all round team,” McGarry said. “I think their offensive line was maybe the best unit as far as the skill positions of the offensive line and the defensive line. For any team, I think their offensive line is one of the better units in football.”
“It’s just the guys they have in their team, Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith. They’ve got a bunch of good offensive weapons, so I think they were the better team overall.”
McGarry thought the Eagles played really well.
“Absolutely, 100%,” McGarry stated on whether the Eagles deserved to win.
McGarry was also happy with the outcome of the game.
“I liked what happened. The Chiefs are rivals with my favorite team. The Chiefs and Raiders play in the same division and I’m kind of sick of the Chiefs,” McGarry stated his general feelings about the result of the Super Bowl.
“I like in sports when there’s different teams winning. I’m not a big fan when one team wins every year, and I think a lot of people will agree with that they didn’t have a ‘dog’ in the fight. I like when someone new wins. I’m sick of seeing the Chiefs every single year.”
McGarry also thought that a Chiefs win could have created different scenarios for the league.
“They would’ve won three Super Bowls in a row. And then, you could imagine that maybe players in the off season, a lot of other players would come join them so that they could also win the Super Bowl themselves,” McGarry stated an alternative ending to the Super Bowl. “So who knows, maybe if the Chiefs won, they would’ve gotten different guys in the off season. That could be a scenario.”
McGarry stated that both teams will possibly play again in the next Super Bowl.
“Yea. I think both teams will be there. Both teams will make the playoffs, I would imagine.”
