On the Board of Education Day, students have the day off while teachers attend workshops to improve their teaching styles. Teachers have been asked how to develop schools to be a better place. Yet, students have never been asked.
Most people consider IMS as a diverse and virtuous place to be, especially the teachers. They believe our school is a positive place to be in while there are some things that could be improved.
Anagha Gore, a student from IMS said that this school needs to discipline some kids that are not behaving well, increase space for lockers and hallways, have more clubs and funding. She also stated that the rules for when you should go to lockers should be changed.
“While our school can be loud and crowded in the hallways, it is a fun and safe place to learn and be a part of,” Gore said.
Another student, Ammal Javed, said that this school should expand the 3-minute time to move between classes since “the hallways are loud and crowded.” She also said that our school needs to spend money on indoor badminton courts for students.
“Whenever we get to play badminton, there isn’t any space to play because of the space we have, which makes it hard for them to play. So, I believe that the school should spend money on indoor badminton courts for people who want to play it,” said Javed.
Yesha Mewani was also interviewed and her answers were compelling.
She stated that she loves the school and everything about it. Yet she believes that we need more extracurricular activities for the students in this school. Her belief is that the way of teaching limits students’ creativity and students need recess.
“Our school should allow students to make more clubs based on their interests and present ways on Board of Education Days that will expand creativity. Also, we need recess!” said Mewani.
While some students enjoy school, some students are not as optimistic.
Laaibah Adeel, a 7th grader from IMS, explicitly stated her answers.
She assertively stated that school isn’t really her thing, it is a “boring” environment, and that her favorite part of the school day is having lunch with her friends. Even while being pessimistic, Laaibah says that our gym floors should be cleaned regularly and how having a volleyball court outside would be nice.
“We should build a swimming pool on the school campus and have a swimming team. Also, even if we are middle schoolers, it doesn’t mean that we can’t have recess,” Adeel said.
Ultimately, some think IMS needs to change some rules, add more to it, or fix things they already have. This feedback also is kind of a message to teachers that student feedback can help Iselin Middle School. The bell may have rung, but the insights shared by students may develop the way IMS is seen tomorrow.
