Both Mr. McGary and Mr. Byington are volleyball coaches at Iselin Middle School.
They both have been the volleyball coaches for 5 years, and they both said they really enjoy it. Even though there are two different teams they still work together.
Neither of them are volleyball coaches outside of school, but Byington plays in a summer league. McGary would like to be a coach outside of school; he just needs more practice and more experience. When they play themselves, Byington and McGary both enjoy the front row because sometimes their passes aren’t always good.
“I enjoy playing front row attack because I really enjoy spiking the ball,” said Mr. Byington.
“I would enjoy playing front row because I have my sets and spikes. I am just not a perfect passer,” said Mr. McGary
Both coaches enjoy their time coaching every year but their best year was last year. The girls have not yet won a championship but last year the boys won. Both coaches agreed that it might be easier to work with the girls but both teams do very well every year.
Mr. Byington and Mr. McGary think that one of the hardest parts about being a coach is choosing the right people for the team. During the interview Mr.McGary mentioned how it isn’t just about how good the player is, it’s the attitude they bring to the team.
Yes, they both coach different teams but they still work together a lot. Mr. Byington and Mr. McGary both mentioned how sometimes at practice during game play they will jump in and play. So even though they aren’t together all of the time they still are one whole team.
Mr. McGary is both a baseball coach and volleyball coach. He said that he likes to be both a volleyball and baseball coach, but he enjoys baseball coaching a little bit more because he has been doing it for a while. Once he gets used to volleyball more, he said, he will start getting more into it.
Both coaches mentioned this a couple times in the interview about having a positive attitude. If you have a person on the team that isn’t pumping up the team after a bad play, then they are not fit for a team. Even after a bad pass or play your team should be pumping each other up.
The girls team and boys team have different practices but even after practices both of the coaches talk together to talk about how they improved or not. The coaches give each other advice on both teams.
Every year, coaches tell their team that even if they don’t win it is important to have confidence and have fun and every year they hope to win the championship.
