Billie Eilish went from making music in her bedroom with her older brother, Finneas, to being one of the world’s biggest pop stars. In her time, she has released two EPs and three albums. Here’s my take on her most recent album.
Billie Eilish’s latest album, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT was released on May 17, 2024. This album had many hits and was by far, one of her most notable albums. After her two other albums, this could be described as one of her most vulnerable albums because she lets herself be free and open with her emotions.
The first track on the album was “SKINNY,” it refers to Eilish’s ordeals with things such as struggling with body image, the things the public says, heartbreak, and love; many of these topics are completely irrelevant to one another, but she managed to clash all that and put them into a singular song, expressing her emotions greatly.
I found that part very inspiring. The embodiment of this song and the meaning behind it ran deeper than what the world could see, but it was expressed well and I enjoyed how relatable the song was.
Throughout the entire album, I can describe it as feeling like I was walking through a room with her emotions and feelings being plastered onto the walls in picture frames.
My personal favorites from this album include “SKINNY,” “THE GREATEST,” and “BLUE.” All of these songs make me feel super comforted and the way the words are so well-spoken, these songs really resonated with me for their relatable lyrics and their deep, hidden messages.
“My personal favorites from HIT ME HARD AND SOFT are ‘WILDFLOWER’ ‘SKINNY’ ‘L’AMOUR DE MA VIE’ and ‘THE GREATEST’ because they describe emotions that I often find to be indescribable,” 7th grade student, Navya Patel said.
I feel like some of the other songs were a bit confusing to navigate through; this includes some songs that I enjoyed less such as “LUNCH” and “CHIHIRO” because they were less relatable and I didn’t enjoy the tunes of the songs as much. However, the songs were still nice and honestly full of energy.
“I don’t have a least favorite song, but I think the song I’d listen to the least is “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” because of its popularity and it was overused. It gets annoying to listen to the song too many times,” Patel said.
I really enjoyed “SKINNY” and “THE GREATEST” because I find comfort in their deep meanings and their relatable lyrics. On the other hand, “BLUE” is one of my favorites because the song transitions from an upbeat melody, using lyrics from all her other songs in the album, into a more soft tune and then into the bright, joyous air.
The most popular songs from the album include “WILDFLOWER” and “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” because of their catchy tunes and melodies. Many people among many platforms describe the two songs as being relatable and their meanings of love being portrayed in alternate ways.
The album was fantastic because it embodies Billie’s new founding of herself after many years of speaking for the life of others and by putting a label on the many feelings and challenges faced by this generation.
Patel said, “Overall, I loved the album and everything about it because the songs all had a sense of uniqueness and they described many tough, indescribable emotions.”
Through the HIT ME HARD AND SOFT album, Billie EIlish has made herself soar in popularity through her tremendous vocals, her talent, passion for music, and her understanding of the many emotions that she once could not express for herself.
