Griffin Schmidt is a 7th-grade Medal of Honor teacher at Iselin Middle School (IMS). He teaches Medal of Honor throughout the full year. He used to teach 6th grade.
Schmidt spends most of his day here teaching Medal of Honor periods 1,2,3,5, but when school ends, he starts modifying his car and spending time with his girlfriend.
Schmidt has been teaching for 4 years, covering grades 6-7.
Schmidt’s love for history started when he was a child, watching history TV shows, and his mother also worked as a history teacher at JFK High School.
During Schmidt’s first few months of teaching history, he felt overwhelmed, but over time, he got the hang of it thanks to the amazing students who helped him.
Schmidt states, “Teaching history has its ups and downs, like when you get to an important part of a war or revolution, and you need the class to be quiet, but they won’t listen. But the upside is that sometimes I get to learn new things.”
He believes that “learning even the tiniest things in history is way more important than not learning anything at all.”
Schmidt says he loves being a teacher because he gets to teach children the importance of geography, the Medal of Honor, and just being able to teach in general.
His goal for teaching is to create a warm and safe environment where students feel at home and can learn effectively.
Schmidt says that when a student is acting up, he won’t instantly write them up; he will have a chat with them so he can give the child a chance to change his actions.
