Mrs. Rogoff is a middle school science teacher at Iselin middle school who was willing to share her memories from her middle school experience. She shared her opinion that the new technologies and inventions have made the schools more complex and competitive, but this also leads to more opportunities and an easier way to explore and learn.
Mrs. Rogoff went to a small-town school in northern New Jersey called Rutherford. The first “annoying” thing that comes to mind is homework. She talked about how the homework was harder and how the teachers were much stricter.
The teachers, unlike now, were not lenient for grades and very serious about work and school itself. She also talked about how careless the students are these days and how some don’t even bother to do their own work.
“We would never, we would never have missing assignments and will always do our work when we were in middle school,” Mrs. Rogoff said.
She talks about her time in the marching band. There were very few electives in her school compared to ours. All of our classes that required computers were not in her school, and there were only a few elective classes at all.
“Unlike now, we used to march around the town with maybe a police officer by our side.
Nowadays, you guys practice on the track outside,” Mrs.Rogoff said.
Other electives she mentions that were different compared to now are cooking and sewing. She said that as time passed on they were stopped and now there are new modern electives like robotics and coding. Talking of modernity, she also mentioned the lack of computers and how they had to go to the library if they wanted to find answers or needed help with homework.
She talked about how the computers make it more complex that before everything was straightforward and simple, nevertheless it was hard, but now with the internet , education has only become more complex. Adding on, She talked about how we have more room to navigate and have more opportunities now.
One of tech recent complex inventions right now is AI. Mrs.Rogoff was asked about whether or not AI would have changed her life, she answered that it would have changed her life dramatically. She even gave an example that she would have probably been a TikTok addict if she was in the era of AI.
