MARYALICE ROGOFF is a science teacher who works at Iselin Middle School. She teaches students mainly all three grades, with 8th grade being the most prominent of them all.
For her students of 8th grade, she teaches about certain fields of science that consist of the planet Earth and the solar system. She also teaches about biology, cellular reproduction, and more.
Rogoff believes that science is beneficial to us for the reason that it allows for new discoveries that can significantly enhance our current knowledge of our surroundings and the technology we have.
She said, “Every field of science connects to each other in certain or unique, direct or indirect, and beneficial or harmful ways. We are all on this metal pinhead in the universe, and this is all we have.
“If you have some kind of medical issue, the more breakthroughs we have can help us with our antibodies. If you breathe in good air, then you won’t have any problems, but if you breathe in bad air, then you will have some problems in your body.”
We asked her if she has had any difficulty teaching any of the topics she taught so far to her students. She told us that the most difficult topic to teach so far was astronomy.
We asked her why she liked teaching science above all other subjects.
She said, “I always like to discover new things, and teaching science to my students can probably help them find new discoveries as well.”
We asked her if she thinks her students like science.
She said, “I think that sometimes they are excited by different parts of science. Some were interested in the physics unit. Others were interested in the astronomy unit. It all depends on what they find interesting, whether it is science overall or not.”
