Writer Nichole Acosta said writing is important because it helps people express themselves, process emotions and communicate with others.
Writing is the act of using symbols, letters, or words to communicate ideas, thoughts, or information in a lasting, visible form. “Writing is a way to get everything out of your head. Off your chest and into the world,” said Acosta. Writing is a way of communicating effectively and strongly, because, “any job you’ll need to write for.”
For Acosta, writing started at age 11 after a creative writing teacher encouraged her in middle school. Before that, Acosta said she disliked writing and did not enjoy English assignments.
“I hated every English assignment,” Acosta said. “I just didn’t want to do it.”
Over time, writing became more than just schoolwork. Acosta said writing helps her reflect on life and understand her thoughts and emotions better. “Writing is like a way of breathing for me,” Acosta said.
Acosta also said writers often find inspiration in the work of others. She named writers such as Andrea Gibson, Amiri Baraka and Diana O as major influences on her craft. According to Acosta, reading the work of other writers can help upcoming authors discover new ideas, styles and ways to connect with readers.
For some writers, they take inspiration from other writers and connect with others’ stories. And no, not every thought in writing has to be your own. Writing often relies on external sources, research, and inspiration, if they are properly used to avoid plagiarism.
Acosta said writing is important because it is a strong form of communication and a skill people will use in almost every job. She also encouraged future writers to keep going, even when writing feels difficult. “Nothing is stopping you but you,” Acosta said.
