Patrick McGann, the 8th grade history teacher at IMS, and the coach of the high school team at JFK shared his experiences with football throughout his life.
McGann started playing football in his junior year of high school, and he played the position of offensive line backer. Though, when asked of his favorite football position, he said offensive guard was his favorite.
Mr. McGann also stated that football was his favorite sport, but he didn’t get into coaching football initially.
When asked if he always wanted to be a football coach, he stated, “Well no, but I knew coaching was always important and I wanted to see other kids live up to their dreams.”
Before he became a football coach, he was studying teaching along with substitute teaching, and picked up coaching along the way when the opportunity opened up to him.
Moreover, he took the position for many reasons. For instance, he played football in high school, had a football coach in his family, and helped coach the freshman when he was still in high school. For these various factors, he was already suited for the job.
When he finally got the job, he stated that the job was an exciting experience and it was rewarding to see kids succeed.
Additionally, he also stated, “I have been working my whole life for this call from starting from playing as a freshman until the interview process to become a coach.”
McGann repeatedly stated that he wanted to see the kids he coaches succeed, showing his genuine character. Also, when asked what he thinks his kids think of him, he said that he hopes they know he cares about them.
Mr. McGann also gave his strategies to motivate his kids, for instance, he said creating milestones was a big help.
Mr. McGann’s life has been full of football, and now he spreads that to other kids through his coaching. He enjoys his job and is looking forward to having even more players on his JFK football team.
