Kayle McGarry is a gym teacher at Iselin Middle School. He has been teaching volleyball for the past 4 years. He always wants to learn something new. Since he grew up playing basketball and baseball, he wanted to learn something different which was volleyball
McGarry thinks his students usually like volleyball more because they find it more fun, interesting and engaging, plus the students have been the most successful with volleyball and they win very often while playing volleyball.
McGarry says that the first and most basic skill I teach to beginners is set and bump.” McGarry thinks that the hardest part about being a volleyball coach is to keep the team together and to figure out who is good at what position.
McGarry highly encourages teamwork. In class he picks a group of students that like each other. “If students don’t like another person it can bring the team down.”
“You know how there are some students who are not willing to be nice to others,” so McGarry likes to get those together first who like each other and support each other while playing and practicing.
McGarry tells his students to practice everyday. He also helps them with the things they are struggling with. McGarry also tells his students to come with a positive attitude. “Don’t come with a negative attitude and wreck others’ day.”
McGarry advises that if the team loses, the students should just take a break and when they come back they should be ready to practice even more and become better.
